2024 USGP at Circuit Of The Americas (COTA)

This patch hat holds a special significance for many reasons, beyond commemorating the first Ferrari 1-2 finish in 17 years, which took place at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA). Located in the Texas Hill Country just east of Austin, COTA is a permanent road course that has become iconic in the world of motorsport. Even with the excitement at the end the weekend would also have a bit of melancholy, because this would be the first GP without Austin’s favorite Aussie, Danny Riccardo, who was replaced by Liam Lawson for remainder of the season.

The 2023 edition of the United States Grand Prix marked my first time attending a Formula 1 Grand Prix in person, making this design particularly meaningful, because this was the GP that nucleated the idea for Zechstein Supply Company, because I disliked the mass produced overpriced merch. COTA is also the track that brought Formula 1 back to the United States. Built with the mantra “Build it and they will come,” the circuit truly delivered. Its layout features corners inspired by some of the most iconic circuits on the F1 calendar and utilizes the natural topography of the Hill Country to create its signature mad dash uphill into Turn One, affectionately known as “Big Red.”

Since the track was constructed in 2012, there aren’t classic programs to draw inspiration from for this design. Instead, I looked elsewhere. For Austinites who lived in the city before 2018, the now-demolished Hills Café on South Congress may evoke fond memories. Opened in 1947, Hills Café was a beloved South Austin hotspot with an iconic neon sign that reminded me of “Big Red.” The café closed its doors in 2018, with plans to reopen that have yet to materialize. For over 70 years, it served the community with live music, great barbecue, and classic Texas fare.

This COTA hat pays tribute to both the legacy of Hills Café and the uniqueness of the Circuit of the Americas. It’s our first contemporary Grand Prix design and our first original creation—a celebration of both the past and present, brought together in one bold and meaningful design.
