JIM CLARK DOMINATES DUTCH GRAND PRIX AT ZANDVOORT, GURNEY'S REMARKABLE CHARGE SECURES 2ND  FOR THE AMERICAN IN 1963 CLASSIC

 

The XI Grote Prijs van Nederland in 1963 showcased a picturesque summer afternoon among the wind-swept dunes of Circuit Zandvoort along the North Sea coast. A Lotus 25-Climax piloted by the Flying Scotsman Jim Clark was on pole, joined by a BRM P57 piloted by Englishman Graham Hill and Kiwi Bruce McLaren in a Cooper T66-Climax. Clark led early after a drag race into the Tarzan hairpin, with Hill briefly taking the lead before mechanical gremlins sidelined both the “Gentleman Racer” and McLaren.

 

The Brabham BT7-Climax piloted by American Dan Gurney made an impressive charge from 14th to take 2nd, with the podium rounded out by Britain’s John Surtees in a Ferrari Dino 156/63. Clark's dominant performance, which included lapping all but Gurney, secured a memorable victory for the Flying Scotsman amidst the Californian’s remarkable charge through the field from the back of the grid.
