Stewart Masters the Wet to Secure Matra's First 1-2 Finish
The 1968 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort unfolded in challenging wet conditions among the dune fields along the North Sea shoreline. New Zealander Chris Amon, driving a Ferrari, claimed pole position, alongside Germany’s Jochen Rindt in a Brabham and Britain’s Graham Hill in a Gold Leaf-Lotus. In fifth was the Matra driven by Scotsman Jackie Stewart.
As rain intensified on race day, Rindt briefly led but slipped to third, allowing Hill and Stewart to take charge. Stewart showcased exceptional wet-weather driving, overtaking Hill and leading teammate Jean-Pierre Beltoise to a dominant 1-2 finish, lapping the entire field except for Mexican Pedro Rodríguez in a BRM. Rodríguez was promoted to third after multiple spins in the rain ended Hill’s race. The 1968 Dutch Grand Prix not only marked the French constructor Matra‘s first 1-2 finish, but their first ever win in the FIA World Championship thanks to the miraculous driving of both Matras in rain soaked conditions.
