1970 Astro Grand Prix, Houston TX

The 1970 Astro Grand Prix, held inside the Astrodome in Houston, Texas, marked the second edition of the United States Automobile Club (USAC) race. Featuring USAC legends like Bruce Walkup, Dave Strickland, Bill Vukovich, and local hero A.J. Foyt, the race was characterized as one of the wildest in midget car history. Drivers aggressively cut through the infield, transforming the original ¼-mile oval into a chaotic battleground where cars tore up and flung tire markers. Foyt's strategic move on lap 59 to pass Vukovich set the stage for a dramatic finale after a red flag temporarily halted the mayhem. With a strong restart, Foyt surged into the lead and held on to secure victory in front of a crowd of nearly 22,000, preserving a memorable moment in the history of the Astrodome, once hailed as the 8th Wonder of the World.
