Foyt Edges Bettenhausen in Nail-Biting Texas Duel
In 1979, amidst turmoil between the United States Auto Club (USAC) and the Champion Auto Racing Teams (CART), combined with the 1979 oil crisis related to the Iranian Revolution, the Coors 200 at Texas World Speedway still managed to showcase a thrilling battle between Houstonian A.J. Foyt and Indiana’s Gary Bettenhausen, two powerhouses of American open-wheel racing.
Despite most drivers favoring CART-sanctioned events outside of the Indy 500, Foyt and Bettenhausen still delivered a high-speed duel on the defunct D-Oval of Texas World Speedway outside of College Station. Foyt led the final laps but faced relentless pressure from Bettenhausen's Armstrong-Bignotti.
In a dramatic finish, Foyt narrowly edged out Bettenhausen by three-tenths of a second to secure victory for Gilmore Racing-Coyote. Despite the challenges in American open-wheel racing that year, Foyt's win at the 1979 Coors 200 cemented his dominance in the USAC Championship series as he secured his 7th and final USAC National Championship.
