Long Beach Roars to Life: A Thrilling Debut for America’s Newest Street Race

As open road racing declined in Europe, it thrived in Long Beach, California. After 18 months of planning, the city hosted its inaugural race on September 28th—a round of the SCCA Formula 5000 Championship. British businessman Chris Pook played a key role in securing the event and was already preparing for a Formula One race on the same circuit in March 1976.

The 2.02-mile track near the docklands lacked Monte Carlo’s glamour but proved highly challenging. The start/finish straight ran along Ocean Boulevard, with steep elevation changes adding drama. While safety fencing obstructed some views, innovative concrete barriers improved visibility. Mindful of its elderly population, the city offered free weekend getaways, though few accepted, reflecting strong local enthusiasm.

The race itself was a thriller. Tony Brise and Al Unser won their heats, with Brise impressively battling Mario Andretti. The 50-lap final saw intense duels, but mechanical failures knocked out Unser, Andretti, and Brise. Brian Redman claimed victory, securing his second consecutive SCCA F5000 title, with Vern Schuppan the only other driver on the lead lap.

Long Beach had firmly established itself as a premier racing destination, setting the stage for future world-class events.
