"JACKIE STEWART CRUISES TO DOMINANT VICTORY AT SOMBER 1971 BRITISH GRAND PRIX, TRIBUTE PAID TO FALLEN STAR PEDRO RODRIGUEZ"
The gentle rolling countryside of North Hampshire surrounds the flat Silverstone Circuit, which hosted the XXIV RAC British Grand Prix. Normally sponsored by the Daily Mail, known for publishing gory crash and death photographs, this edition had a more wholesome title sponsor in the form of the International Wool Secretariat or simply Woolmark. Those in attendance enjoyed a comfortable afternoon watching Jackie Stewart dominate the entire field. The weekend unfortunately started on a somber note following the death of Mexican star and BRM driver Pedro Rodriguez in a German sports car race the prior week. Scotland’s Jackie Stewart, piloting a “fresh out the box” Ford-powered Tyrrell 003, was narrowly beaten out for pole by a Ferrari piloted by Switzerland’s Clay Regazzoni. Stewart rocketed from the start and never looked back, showcasing remarkable pace throughout to secure a truly dominant win by nearly 24 seconds. While Stewart was on a Sunday cruise, Sweden’s Ronnie Peterson’s March moved up three positions, and Brazil’s Emerson Fittipaldi’s Goldleaf-Lotus moved up one place, finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively, giving the spectators something to cheer for. Jo Siffert, driving the sole BRM in tribute to Rodriguez, finished a respectable 9th ahead of Stewart's teammate, Frenchman Francois Cevert, in an older Tyrrell. The race will be remembered for Stewart's flawless performance rather than for its overall excitement at the former WWII airfield.
