Local hero Emerson Fittipaldi’s move to a national constructor excited fans, but the front row belonged to James Hunt and reigning champion Niki Lauda. A chaotic getaway allowed Clay Regazzoni to lead briefly before Lauda and Hunt battled. Hunt’s throttle stuck on lap 33, sending him into the barriers. Lauda kept his car on the road and, with superior reliability, took the victory and an early championship lead, setting the stage for a legendary rivalry.
