1988 Mexican Grand Prix
In the final year of the “Turbo Era”, the 1988 Mexican Grand Prix offered real excitement during a time when the Mclaren MP4/4 was the most dominant care on the track. Alain Prost would triumph over Ayrton Senna in a head-to-head battle. Senna started on pole lap but lost the lead at the start due to a patchy surface and a prematurely opening pop-off valve. Prost capitalized, maintaining control with a precise, measured pace that silenced critics questioning his ability to beat Senna in equal machinery.
Ferrari’s Gerhard Berger posed a genuine threat, reflecting the team’s progress in closing the horsepower gap to McLaren’s Hondas. Berger closed in on Senna mid-race but was held back by faulty fuel readouts, forcing him to slow down unnecessarily. Post-race inspections revealed ample fuel, making it a missed opportunity for Ferrari.
Prost expertly managed tire wear and engine temperatures to secure his 31st career win, while Senna held onto second, narrowly avoiding fuel depletion. Berger finished third, showcasing Ferrari’s improved speed and handling.
Meanwhile, Williams endured a nightmare weekend as their active suspension system faltered. Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese retired early, their cars plagued by mechanical failures and unpredictable handling.
The race underlined McLaren’s supremacy, with Ferrari inching closer but still unable to topple the dominant MP4/4.remained untouchable, combining brilliant traction, aerodynamics, and Honda power to dominate the season.
