What began with a Xerox Special purchased from Roger Penske quickly evolved into a monster—the McLaren M6A, arguably the fastest sports car of its time. Mounted midship behind the driver was a heavily modified Chevy small-block V8, tuned with precision using American hot-rod components.

Equipped with a Mickey Thompson manifold and a Lucas Fuel Injection system, this 6.0-liter powerhouse delivered over 500 bhp. To ensure every engine met their exacting standards, McLaren assembled and tuned them in-house.

Adding a touch of personality, the rocker-arm covers bore small nameplates with the words ‘Flower Power.’ Bruce McLaren remarked, “We thought it was a nice touch.”

From 1968 onward, the Flower Power ethos was reimagined around an all-aluminum big-block V8. This evolution saw a remarkable reliability and a leap in power output:

• M8A: 7.0L, 620 bhp
• M8D: 7.6L, 680 bhp
• M8F: 8.1L, 740 bhp
• M20: 8.3L, 787 bhp

Each iteration was a testament to Team McLaren's relentless pursuit,of speed and innovation, solidifying their dominance in the Can-Am series even after the tragic loss of Bruce McLaren during testing of the M8D.
