IMSA Roars into San Antonio Amid Early Challenges
Screeching tires and roaring engines rattled the Texas Hill Country as the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) hosted its 1st Nissan 3-hour Grand Prix of San Antonio over Labor Day weekend as part of the IMSA Camel GT Championship. The event aimed to boost hotel revenue and promote the city as a sports destination. Organized with the Alamo Grand Prix Association, the race was initially delayed to 1987 due to street work.
Despite a rocky start with late preparations and complaints about the layout of the bumpy track, fans enjoyed views from hotel balconies and the Tower of the Americas. With a turnout of 53,000 over two days, the race was a success. Derek Bell, Chip Robinson, and Al Holbert's Lowenbrau Porsche 962 clinched victory in the top GTP class. Although the event grew in subsequent years, it concluded in 1990, falling short of revenue expectations.
