1971 MINNEAPOLIS TRIBUNE CAN-AM, DONNYBROOKE: A DOMINANT DISPLAY IN THE NORTH WOODS

The second-growth forest of Minnesota's North Woods provided the backdrop for the seventh round of the 1971 CAN-AM Challenge Cup at Donnybrooke International Speedway. The 3-mile permanent road course, known for its flat, nearly mile-long straight, saw Scotland's Jackie Stewart take an early lead in his Haas Lola T260. However, Stewart was quickly overtaken by Peter Revson in a Chevy-powered McLaren M8F.

Revson went on to secure his fourth CAN-AM victory of the season, on his way to his first CAN-AM drivers' title. Teammate Denny Hulme finished second, making it a McLaren 1-2 finish. Revson averaged 119.137 mph, with Hulme setting the fastest lap at 122.923 mph. McLaren's dominance was evident as they lapped the field, further solidifying their position as the team to beat in CAN-AM. However, the 1972 season would see a new contender emerge in the form of a Penske-Porsche collaboration.
