James Hunt lived up to his nickname in spectacular fashion at the ’77 USGP-West, launching his McLaren skyward on the opening lap like it mistook the streets of Long Beach for LAX. The airborne antics may have ended Hunt’s race early, but they set the stage for a far more grounded triumph—Mario Andretti’s first-ever Formula 1 win on U.S. soil. As Hunt went flying, Andretti soared in his own way, taking a historic victory in front of a thrilled American crowd.
The win made Andretti the first American to win a F1 World Championship qualifying race on home soil. As the season progressed, the Lotus-JPS3 evolved into a dominant force, setting the stage for its dominance in the 1978 season.
